Blessed are the meek (Mt. 5:5)

THE BEATITUDES (3)

Jesus said,

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

(Mt. 5:5)

Meekness reflects a modest and gentle character, which is held in high esteem by the Lord. In relationships, meekness is the opposite of a self-important, quarrelsome or vengeful spirit. This person might willing suffer an injustice without retaliation. Leaving the matter to God – a righteous judge.

Jesus spoke of Himself as meek. “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:29) Jesus didn’t retaliate when insulted or threaten revenge when wronged. Instead he left the matter in Father’s hands, who always judges fairly.

Earth here might be understood as the Promised Land or a type of blessings – the evidence and expression of God’s favor resting on those who belong to Him. But this world isn’t the believers finally resting place and inheritance. Finally, God’s true children inherit all things and dwell with Him as joint heirs with Christ in the New Earth.
